The Hot Hong Kong Summer
Hey!! This was was really good! I didnt have time to write last week, but last week was also super good!! Ive kinda been the worst at writing weeklys, basically my entire mission haha so im going to write a real one this week about what we actually do!
But first, lets talk about the weather... Literally I cant believe in experiencing another Hong Kong summer, I cant believe I made it out of the last one alive! I just walk outside and my hair my clothes my body, all just so sticky and wet! Theres always extreme weather hear warnings and everyone carried around a fan and a rag to wipe their sweat!
Last week we had an FHE for all the ysa in our ward at the bishops House! Ysa here are normally like 18-50 years old.. Were teaching a lot of "ysa" haha so we invited them and three of them came and got to know more members their age, it was great! We played some games, an that part was so fun but we had to memorize everyones full chinese name and then be able to say it really fast if you drew the same card! It was really fast paced and my head was hurting from all the cantonese by the end of the night haha but I love all the ysa in our ward!! They are so awesome!!!
This week we saw some cool miracles!
On tuesday and friday we went over to a members home who hasnt been to church in a while! We help teach her nephew homework every week and then teach him about God and Jesus! His name is chun wai and hes 9 years old! This week we showed him some videos showing Jesus Christ performing miracles! Chun Wai thinks that Jesus is just the coolest, its so cute. Chun wai's mandarin is better than his cantonese, so we teach in both and His aunt helps to teach him too! On friday when we went, he had a nine year old friend over! His friend just got to Hong Kong a few weeks ago hes from mainland and doesnt speak cantonese too well but can understand it! It was SO fun talking with him! He said Im the first white person he has ever seen in his whole life. He was basically just hitting on me the entire time, saying how beautiful my eyes were, my hair, my height, my nose, my skin color haha gosh, I thought this 9 year old was about to ask me to be dating hahahaha his speaking cantonese isnt great and my speaking madarin isnt great, but we can both listen and understand the other language. so when we talk to eachother, ill talk in cantonese and he will respond In mandarin! It was so cool, ive never experienced that before! Im suprised by how much mandarin I actually understand too
We met with our friend Calvin after church on sunday and gave him a baptism goal for August 14th, same as Mrs. Siu's (another friend were teaching)! I love Calvin, hes a ysa about 28 years old and we have too much fun teaching eachother slang in eachothers language! (hes learning english) Weve only been teaching him for three weeks but WOW, the change in him already is so real. And just as hes been learning about Jesus Christ, hes said that he really naturally just wants to follow Him and change! When we first brought up baptism he was kind of saying how its kind of the "end goal" for him that he thinks he will eventually reach. Then we helped explain how its really a "start". It was so cool and hes so excited! After the lesson, we walked and got on the light rail together, and he turned to me and said that his baptism was "abouta be LIT" it was sooo funny in his cantonese accent
We got a Referral from the mission office that someone living in our area clicked on a facebook ad that she wanted to pray with some Missionaries! We called her and she has recently lost a lot of hope in her family situation and so we prayed with her! A few days later we met with her outside at a park and discussed about the plan of salvation! She loved it, It was so cool to see her get so excited when we told her that her family can literally be together forever.
On thursday we had some lessons, one with our friend John. Every week we meet him at the kfc a few minutes away and talk about and read the book of mormon. He always has the best questions! It makes it fun for us, because we always know we have to study extra hard about the readings we give him so we can answer his questions haha we have to go pretty slow with John to help him really understand! We each have a paper that we write on each time we meet so we can add on any names of characters and places and times and concepts that we just read. It really helps John and His lessons are always so fun! He hasnt taken the vaccine yet, so he cant come to church. But he said hes planning on it soon, but for now were going to help him know how to use it on Zoom!
We went to Mrs siu and Mrs lees apartment for the first time this week! Mrs siu is going to be baptized shortly after I leave! Well, it was ironic that we planned that time to teach the word of wisdom because her apartment smelt really bad of smoke. We actually had to cut the lesson short and leave a little early because my comp and i couldnt breath and our throats hurt! But we asked if she smokes and she said no... Not sure what were going to do about this one but ill update this next week
Another missionary gave us a referall for someone from facebook interested in taking english class that lives in Tin Shui Wai! We gave him a call, I did a little english evaluation to put him in the right class and then we asked him if he would be interested in hearing messages about Jesus Christ and he said yes! We will start Meeting with him this week!
I just thought about how it will be to look back on my mission when I give my homecoming talk. Being at the pulpit trying to describe the hard, the good, the tender mercies, the everyday interactions with the Hong Kong people. I just cry when I think about it. We bought some 蛋撻 (egg tarts) today from the bakery across the street and the bakery worker was pregnant. I asked her when she was due and we chatted for a minute. She was so kind and genuine. I love the people here :) everyone is so caring. I feel so safe and cared for by people that I dont even know. Hong Kong is SUCH a special place and i will be forever grateful for my special mission experience.
